Vines- a plant with a weak stem that derives support from climbing, twining, or creeping along a surface.

Vines have always been very interesting to me as when they intertwine, twist etc. new spaces are created, hence through this experimentation i tried to grasp certain areas of the vines to explore possible spaces that can be related back to architecture.

The model is based around a central branch for which the vines intertwine around, tapering off at the beginning and end, having the cluster more in the middle. The vines are prism like to give it an industrial look letting us relate to its architecture.

Each iteration shows the vines thicker or thinner expressing the different types of vines in a forest.

Below are a few example of my iterations.

Change of idea

After much stress and fiddling around with grasshoppper i found it really difficult to grasp my desired concept, hence having to change to something more simpler considering i am still new to this program and 3ds max (architecture student).

My new concept

Vines- a plant with a weak stem that derives support from climbing, twining, or creeping along a surface. i have always found vines to be very interesting as when they intertwine etc. new spaces are discovered, hence through this experimentation i will grasp certain areas of the vines to explore possible spaces that can be related back to architecture.

There are many different types of ways they grow as shown below-

i want to focus on the intertwining method around a central focus such as a symbolistic branch.
i dont want to keep to the more cylindrical shapes of the vines, rather i want it more prism like along with the middle branch to further relate it back to architecture and keep it more industrial like and more abstract. A quick sketch below illustrates my idea, hoping to imitate the drawing as much as i can within grasshopper.

I hope to capture the randomness of the vines within the forest, showing its unsystematic nature, intertwining, overlapping, twisting have no set direction. Below are some inspirations for my theme that i hope to base my model around.

Concept developed

I have decided to base my project around the theme of a spider web. through research in different geometries made by various spiders, none seemed to grasp my eye. although i came across an experiment done by NASA in 1995 in which spiders were exposed to various chemicals then were tested based on the patterns of webs they spun.

Chemicals Included:
-Marijuana,
-Benzedrine,
-Caffeine and;
-Chloral Hydrate

The Aim
The aim was to compare the web weaved geometry by the spiders to the web of a sober spider. The effects of the different psychoactive substances are more visible than on the flat drawings of the webs.

The Effects

" *Marijuana affects concentration of the spider. Parts of the web, especially toward the outside, so late in the making of the web, are incomplete or missing.

*Benzedrine, stimulating substance, causes great excitement in the spider. It works hard to weave his web but his haste causes significant omissions in the construction.

*Caffeine greatly disturbs the spider which is no longer capable of doing anything other than a fully heterogeneous and disorderly web.

*Chloral hydrate, sedative substance, slows down the actions of the spider. It falls asleep quickly without completing the making of the web. That explains the very brief appearance. "

This image illustrates the various effects the chemicals had on the spider web, hopefully experimenting using the same idea within rhino/grasshopper gaining various iterations.
